How League of Legends Worlds 2026 Works: The Swiss Stage, Fearless Draft and the Road to Barclays Center

Worlds 2026 knockouts start November 3, with the final at Brooklyn's Barclays Center on November 14. Here's how 19 teams got cut to eight: the Play-In bracket, the Swiss stage's three-wins-or-out rule, the quarterfinal draw, and why Fearless Draft means teams can't lean on one favourite champion all series.

The short version

  • Worlds 2026 is League of Legends' world championship. It started with 19 teams from six regions, and the knockout rounds start on November 3.
  • Teams went through three stages: a four-team Play-In in Los Angeles, a Swiss stage in Allen, Texas, and now a best-of-five knockout bracket.
  • In the Swiss stage, three wins sent you through and three losses sent you home. Eight teams survive to the quarterfinals.
  • Every series is played with Fearless Draft: a champion used in one game of a series can't be picked again in that series. The final is on Saturday, November 14 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The calendar

Riot's official primer, published on October 5, splits Worlds into three stages:

StageDatesWhereFormat
Play-InOct 15-18Los Angeles4 teams, best-of-five, double elimination
Swiss stageOct 23-31Allen, Texas16 teams, best-of-one and best-of-three
QuarterfinalsNov 3-6Allen, Texas8 teams, best-of-five
SemifinalsNov 7-8Allen, Texas4 teams, best-of-five
FinalNov 14Barclays Center, Brooklynbest-of-five

There's also a Fan Fest at Pier 36 in Lower Manhattan from November 12 to 14, running up to the final. Riot's theme for the event is "THIS IS OUR MOMENT".

Who qualified

Six regions sent teams:

  • LCK (Korea): Gen.G, Hanwha Life Esports, T1, Dplus KIA
  • LPL (China): Anyone's Legend, Bilibili Gaming, Top Esports, Invictus Gaming
  • LEC (Europe): G2 Esports, Movistar KOI, Karmine Corp
  • LCS (North America): Team Liquid, LYON, Cloud9
  • LCP (Asia-Pacific): Team Secret Whales, CTBC Flying Oyster, MGN Vikings Esports
  • CBLOL (Brazil): LOS and FURIA

T1 arrive as the team to beat. Reports covering T1's roster say the team won the 2025 title, its third in a row.

Step 1: the Play-In

The four lowest seeds play first: Karmine Corp, Cloud9, MGN Vikings and Brazil's second seed, which turned out to be FURIA. It's a double-elimination bracket, so you need to lose twice to go out, and every match is best-of-five.

Only one team gets through. That was Karmine Corp, who beat Cloud9 3-2 and then MGN Vikings 3-0 twice on lolesports' schedule. Being the fourth seed of a region is brutal at Worlds: three of these four teams flew home before the main event started.

Step 2: the Swiss stage

The Swiss stage is the clever part. Instead of fixed groups, the 16 teams play up to five rounds, and each round you face someone with the same record as you.

Here's how it runs, per Riot's rules:

  1. Round 1 is a seeded draw. Teams are split into four tiers. Tier 1 plays Tier 4 and Tier 2 plays Tier 3, and teams from the same region can't meet yet.
  2. From round 2, records decide pairings. A 1-0 team plays another 1-0 team, a 0-1 plays a 0-1, and so on. Same-region matches are allowed now, but rematches aren't.
  3. Three wins and you're through. Three losses and you're out. Nobody plays more than five matches, because by then everyone has hit one of the two marks.
  4. Early rounds are best-of-one, later ones best-of-three. lolesports' schedule shows single games on the first two days and best-of-threes from October 25 onward, as the matches that decide who advances or goes home come up. That way one bad game doesn't end a team's year.

Why do it this way? Groups can leave a strong team stuck in a "group of death" while a weaker group sends through a team that wouldn't survive anywhere else. Swiss keeps matching teams of similar form, so by the end the eight survivors have all beaten other good teams.

Step 3: the quarterfinal draw

The draw happened on October 31. Teams that went 3-0 are rewarded: the two of them are drawn against two of the 3-2 teams, the ones who scraped through in round five. The remaining four teams are drawn into the other two quarterfinals.

From there it's a straight knockout. Every match is best-of-five, and losing once means you're out.

What is Fearless Draft?

Before every game of League, the two teams take turns banning champions (nobody can use them) and picking the five they'll play. That's the draft.

Fearless Draft adds one rule: once a champion has been picked in a game of a series, it's gone for the rest of that series, for both teams. Riot brought it to its pro leagues in 2025, and rft.gg's Worlds guide calls it "now-permanent".

Here's what that does across a best-of-five:

  • Game 1 plays like a normal draft: each team picks five champions.
  • By game 3, twenty champions are already used up, before any bans are counted.
  • By game 5, forty champions have been picked, and teams are digging into their reserve pools.

That's why players who can play lots of champions are suddenly worth so much more. In the old format, a team could ride its best composition for a whole series. Now, if you pick your best champions early to grab a 2-0 lead, you might have nothing left for a deciding game. On paper, that's why the knockout series this year should look more varied and less predictable than finals of a few years ago.

How to watch

Riot's primer lists the final for 2 PM EST on November 14. That's 12:30 AM IST on Sunday, November 15, so Indian fans have a late night ahead. The quarterfinals run daily from November 3 to 6, and the semifinals on November 7 and 8. Matches stream on lolesports.com, YouTube and Twitch. If you're new, start with the semis: the strongest teams are left, and by then Fearless Draft has every team stretching its champion pool.
