The short version
- Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5s from July to September 2026, down 35% from 4.0 million a year earlier. The total is now 97.9 million.
- PlayStation's operating profit still rose 83% to ¥220.1 billion (about ₹13,200 crore), on sales of ¥1,208.5 billion, up 8.6%.
- Sony raised its full-year PlayStation profit forecast from ¥660 billion to ¥700 billion.
- CFO Lin Tao said work on the next-generation console is progressing as scheduled, with investment in it starting next financial year. There's still no PS6 date or price.
The console numbers
Sony reported its results for July to September on November 5, the second quarter of its financial year. It was a slow three months for PS5 hardware. Shipments fell to 2.6 million, and the first half of the year totals 4.2 million, against 6.5 million in the same half of 2025.
That's normal for a console in its sixth year. Lin Tao said new PS5 sales are "gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle," a point we covered in our explainer on how console cycles work. Hardware revenue fell 4.8% to ¥219.7 billion, a much smaller drop than the unit decline. Higher PS5 prices this year are the likely reason.
The 97.9 million total is consoles shipped to shops, not consoles bought by players. Our guide to shipped vs sold explains the difference.

Where the profit came from
Fewer consoles, but much more money. Almost all of the growth came from things players buy after the console:
| Measure (July-September) | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Game & Network Services sales | ¥1,208.5 billion | Up 8.6% |
| Operating profit | ¥220.1 billion | Up 83% |
| Game software sales | ¥708.5 billion | Up 12.6% |
| Digital full-game sales | ¥330.8 billion | Up 23% |
| Network services (PS Plus, ads) | ¥218.3 billion | Up 19.5% |
| Games sold (all publishers) | 88.2 million | Up 7.9 million |
| First-party games sold | 8.2 million | Up 30% |
| Monthly active users | 127 million | Up from 119 million |
The 83% jump flatters the comparison a little. A year ago Sony booked ¥49.8 billion of one-off charges, including ¥31.5 billion of write-downs on Bungie. Adjusted for those, profit grew about 29%, which is still strong.
Big first-party launches helped too. Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies in its first 50 days after its September 15 launch. Digital purchases now make up 78% of full-game sales, up from 72%, and digital sales earn Sony far more per copy than discs.
Sony raised its forecast
Sony now expects more from PlayStation this year, not less.

The new targets are ¥4,830 billion in sales and ¥700 billion in operating profit for the year to March 2027, up from ¥4,540 billion and ¥660 billion in July. GTA 6 on November 19 should help, since Sony takes a cut of every PS5 copy sold. That can help even with Sony's own God of War Laufey now moved to May.
What Sony said about the PS6
Sony didn't use the name PS6, but it was clear. Lin Tao said Sony intends to make "solid progress" on its next-generation platform next year, and that investment in it will start from the next financial year, which begins in April 2027. Beebom reports he described development as progressing as scheduled.

Memory is the worry hanging over that plan. Prices for RAM have soared this year because of AI servers. According to Daily Beirut's report on the call, Sony said it has agreed memory volumes with suppliers for next year's planned sales, though that doesn't fully guarantee production capacity for the new console. Sony also said it has partly offset higher costs through pricing and promotions.
There's no date or price. Earlier reports pointed to an early March 2027 reveal and a holiday 2027 launch. Those are still unconfirmed, but nothing in these results contradicts them.
What it means for PS5 owners in India
Sony's numbers point the same way as Nintendo's earlier today: consoles are getting more expensive and selling fewer units, while the money is in games and subscriptions. The PS5 disc model already costs ₹69,990 in India, and reports say Sony has warned that stock could stay tight into next year, so a big PS5 price cut before the PS6 looks unlikely.
The next things to watch are Sony's PlayStation Store numbers around GTA 6, and any PS6 news early next year.
