The short version
- A homebrew project called Playden for PS5 lets a jailbroken PS5 sign in to Steam and install PC games from your own library.
- Games run through prospero-win, a PS5 port of Wine, the software Linux and Mac users rely on to run Windows games.
- The project's database lists Cyberpunk 2077, Portal 2, Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Dead Cells and Deep Rock Galactic as playable. Early user reports are mixed, and nobody has published frame rates.
- It's an alpha, it's unofficial, and neither Valve nor Sony supports it. It only works on consoles that have already been jailbroken.
What it does
Tom's Hardware reported the project on October 25, after VideoCardz spotted it on GitHub, and Malaysian site Lowyat.NET followed. The developer, Leo Lobato, adapted the launcher from Playden, his Steam launcher for Mac. The PS5 version went public earlier in October.
You sign in with your Steam account, browse your library and install a game straight to the console. Playden doesn't run the games itself. Instead, it builds a separate PS5 app for each one, so every game gets its own tile on the home screen. Each game also gets its own private Windows setup, so a crash or a broken setting in one doesn't touch the others. It even reads and writes Steam Cloud saves, so progress can follow you between a PC and the PS5.
How it works, layer by layer

The heavy lifting is done by a runtime kit. prospero-win ("Prospero" is the PS5's internal codename) answers the Windows system calls a game makes. Graphics go through two translation layers you may know from the Steam Deck: DXVK turns Direct3D 8 to 11 into Vulkan, and VKD3D-Proton does the same for Direct3D 12.
That matters because a PS5 isn't as alien to PC games as a Switch. It uses an AMD x86 processor and an AMD graphics chip, so the game's code can run on the CPU directly. Only the operating system and graphics calls need translating. Our x86 vs Arm explainer covers why that's such a big advantage.
What's changed in recent versions
The project is moving quickly. Version 0.6.0 added the option to import Windows games from a USB drive or over FTP, rather than only from Steam. It also let games run at 120Hz with the matching runtime kit, kept game data outside the app folder so updates don't wipe it, and added a download queue. Versions 0.7.1 and 0.7.2 have followed since.
Which games work

The list mixes demanding 3D games with lighter 2D ones. Cyberpunk 2077 is the headline because it's a heavy Direct3D 12 game. The 2D games are where you'd expect the fewest problems.
The first user reports match an alpha. One Reddit user said Portal ran fine, apart from a missing mouse cursor and an Escape key that didn't open the menu. A modder showed a Steam library running on the console, but a downloaded game crashed. On paper, a PS5 has plenty of power for older PC games. Getting Windows code, controls and drivers to cooperate on a console is the hard part. The developer calls it alpha software and says users take on any risk themselves.
The catch
All of this needs a jailbroken PS5, which means staying on older firmware and taking a risk every time the console goes online. We covered the latest exploit in our post on the PS5 jailbreak for firmware 14.10, and our jailbreak explainer covers what can go wrong, from bans to bricked consoles.
There's an account risk too. Playden signs in to a real Steam account. Valve doesn't support the launcher, so if something goes wrong with your account, you're on your own. Sony hasn't commented on Playden.
Why it matters
The PS5 is a PC-style machine inside. Turning it into a Steam box was always likely once the console was cracked, much as Linux and Steam ran on jailbroken PS4s. For most players, though, this stays a curiosity. In India, the PS5 disc model costs ₹69,990 at full price, which is a lot to risk on homebrew. If you want Steam games on a TV, a PC or a handheld is still the supported way to do it.
Watch for Sony's next firmware update, which usually closes the holes jailbreaks depend on, and for the project's compatibility list to grow.
