How Do Mods Add DLSS 5 to a Game That Doesn't Support It? Phantom Blade Zero Explained

Phantom Blade Zero shipped with DLSS 4.5 but not DLSS 5, and modders added it anyway in less than a day. Here's how upscaler mods hook into a game, what tools like OptiScaler and the NVIDIA app override actually swap, which RTX cards can run what, and the risks before you try one.

The short version

  • Phantom Blade Zero launched on PC and PS5 on October 28 at 7pm PT (October 29 in India), at ₹4,299 on Steam ($59.99 in the US). On PC it officially supports DLSS 4.5, path tracing and up to 6X Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, but not DLSS 5.
  • Within a day, a Nexus Mods upload called "DLSS5 MOD Install with one click" added Nvidia's DLSS 5 neural rendering anyway. Wccftech reports that it routes the game's existing DLSS calls through ReShade 6.8 and the RenoDX DLSS add-on, without touching the game's files.
  • That works because upscalers all need the same ingredients from a game. If a game already feeds those to one upscaler, a mod can quietly hand them to another.
  • Mods are free and reversible, but they can break visuals, crash, and in online games get you banned.

What actually happened with Phantom Blade Zero

S-GAME's Unreal Engine 5 action game is a single-player release, which makes it a good test bed for mods. Nvidia's launch article lists "the complete suite of DLSS 4.5 technologies": Ray Reconstruction (switched on automatically with path tracing) and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, which lets RTX 50 owners generate up to six frames for each one the GPU renders. DLSS 5 isn't mentioned.

DSOGaming tested the mod on Windows 10 with a Ryzen 9 7950X3D, on both an RTX 5080 and an RTX 5090. At 4K with DLSS 4.5 Quality and 4X frame generation, it reported:

SettingAverage FPS
DLSS 5 off260
DLSS 5 on, default210
DLSS 5 on, custom (Extra Neural Style 5.50)188

The catches it found: a white outline around the main character, and lighting that shifts as the camera moves. Turning the mod's "Extra Neural Style" down to 1.00 fixed both. Wccftech said the scene looks more realistic but called it too early to judge. Remember that this is DLSS 5 running in a way S-GAME never tuned it for.

Step 1: what every upscaler needs from a game

DLSS, AMD's FSR and Intel's XeSS work in roughly the same way. The game renders each frame at a lower resolution, then hands the upscaler a small set of inputs:

  • Colour: the low-resolution image itself.
  • Depth: how far away every pixel is.
  • Motion vectors: which way each pixel moved since the last frame.
  • Camera jitter: a tiny, deliberate shift of the camera each frame, so the upscaler sees slightly different samples it can combine.

The upscaler uses past frames plus those hints to rebuild a sharper image. Frame generation needs the same data to guess the in-between frames. Our DLSS explainer covers what each DLSS feature does with it.

So the expensive work, getting the engine to produce clean motion vectors and depth, happens once. After that, the upscaler on the other end of the pipe is surprisingly swappable.

Step 2: the three ways mods swap the pipe

1. Swap the file. DLSS lives in a file (nvngx_dlss.dll) in the game folder. Dropping in a newer version upgrades the model. Nvidia now does this itself: the NVIDIA app has "DLSS Override" settings under Graphics > Program settings, which can force the newest Super Resolution model, enable Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50 cards when a game only offers regular frame generation, or add DLAA and Ultra Performance modes to games without them. It only works in games Nvidia has verified.

2. Translate the call. OptiScaler, a free open-source mod, sits between the game and the upscaler. Its own description: it intercepts upscaler calls and redirects them to a different backend. A game built for DLSS can then run FSR 3 or XeSS on an AMD or Intel card, or a game with only FSR 2 can run DLSS. It can also add frame generation to some DirectX 12 games.

3. Hook the frame. Tools like ReShade inject themselves into the graphics pipeline and can grab the buffers a game already makes. That's the route the Phantom Blade Zero mod reportedly takes, using a RenoDX add-on to pass the game's DLSS data on to DLSS 5.

Step 3: what your card can actually run

Mods can't add hardware. Nvidia's own support table:

DLSS 5's neural rendering and Dynamic Multi Frame Generation need an RTX 50 card, regular frame generation needs RTX 40 or 50, and Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLAA work on everything back to the RTX 20 series. A mod that promises DLSS 5 on an RTX 3060 can't deliver it.

The risks before you try one

  • Online games and anti-cheat. OptiScaler's own page warns against using it in online games because anti-cheat may ban you. Injected DLLs look exactly like cheats to that software. Phantom Blade Zero is single-player with no multiplayer listed on Steam, which is why modders can experiment freely.
  • DRM and updates. The game uses Denuvo, and any patch can break a mod overnight.
  • Visual artifacts. Upscalers tuned by the developer know about the HUD, particles and transparency. A mod doesn't, so expect ghosting, shimmer, or odd outlines like the ones DSOGaming saw.
  • Only download from the source. OptiScaler says it has no official website or installer app: only GitHub, its Discord and its Nexus page are real. Fake "DLSS unlocker" downloads are a common way to spread malware. See our infostealer guide.

On paper, the official route is still the best one. If you have an RTX 50 card and want to see DLSS 5 in Phantom Blade Zero now, a single-player game like this is the safest place to try a mod. Check whether S-GAME adds official DLSS 5 support in a patch before you rely on the mod for good.
