The short version
- Rockstar's Phil Hooker and Aaron Garbut told Bloomberg the studio's next game won't take another eight years to make.
- They say the engine, tools and team built for GTA 6 will let them build on what's there instead of starting again.
- They didn't name the next game. A new Red Dead is the obvious guess, but that's speculation.
- GTA 6 itself launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, at ₹5,999 ($79.99) for the Standard Edition in India.
What Rockstar said
Hooker said the engine, the tools and the team built during GTA 6 "will allow us to do things more quickly". He described the next step as going "more sideways than upwards", building on the current work rather than rebuilding from scratch.
Garbut said a lot was changed "foundationally" for GTA 6. "But now it's done, and we're not going to rip it apart," he said. He also pointed to the team's shared knowledge after years of working together.
Why GTA 6 took so long
GTA 6 is Rockstar's first big new single-player game since Red Dead Redemption 2 in October 2018. That's eight years between major releases. Before that, Rockstar released a big game every few years.
Part of the wait was new technology. Rockstar rebuilt large parts of its setup for GTA 6, and it was delayed twice, from fall 2025 to May 2026 and then to November 19, 2026. Our GTA 6 release date and price guide has the full timeline.
What it could mean
Bloomberg compared it to the early 2000s, when GTA Vice City arrived a year after GTA 3 because the groundwork was already done. Nobody is suggesting anything that quick this time.
On paper, though, a shorter gap is good news for players. Reusing an engine usually means less time on the basics and more on the game itself. Still, "not eight years" leaves a lot of room, so it's best not to expect anything specific yet.
There's also the separate GamesBeat report that GTA 6 could reach PC by March 2027, which Rockstar hasn't confirmed.
What to watch: GTA 6's launch on November 19, and any hint of what Rockstar is working on next.
