The short version
- A free Hogwarts Legacy update on November 5 adds DLSS 5, Nvidia's AI feature that redraws lighting and material detail. It's PC only.
- It works on GeForce RTX 50 Series desktops and laptops, RTX Spark PCs and GeForce NOW Ultimate. RTX 40 support has been promised but has no date.
- Nvidia claims up to 300 fps at 4K on an RTX 5090 with every setting maxed, using 6x Multi Frame Generation.
- Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche tuned it to boost environments while keeping faces close to the original, after early DLSS 5 demos were criticised for changing how characters looked.
What DLSS 5 actually does
Earlier versions of DLSS mostly rebuild what the game already rendered. Super Resolution sharpens a lower-resolution image, Frame Generation adds extra frames, and Ray Reconstruction cleans up ray-traced lighting. Our DLSS explainer covers how those work.
DLSS 5 does something different. Nvidia calls it 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. It runs as the very last step of each frame, takes the finished image plus motion data, and uses an AI model to add lighting and material detail that wasn't fully there before: softer shadows in corners, richer reflections, more texture on stone and skin. Nvidia says the result is stable from frame to frame and tied to the game's real geometry, so it shouldn't shimmer or invent objects.
For players, it's a single on or off switch. Developers get more control. They can set how strongly it adds fine detail, how much it changes overall colour and lighting, and which parts of the scene it touches, such as boosting buildings while leaving characters mostly alone.
What changes in Hogwarts Legacy
Nvidia says the update, built with Warner Bros. Games and Avalanche Software, sharpens environment detail and shadows, adds texture to characters, refines lighting and makes reflections brighter. Its showcase is Hogsmeade, where the steep, weathered roofs pick up much clearer texture.

Jose Villeta, Avalanche's director of software engineering, said the controls let the team tune environments, tone and skin detail while keeping the game true to its original look.
To use it, update the game and the Nvidia driver (Nvidia released a Game Ready Driver on November 4), then switch on Neural Rendering in the graphics options. Nvidia also recommends DLSS Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation, Reflex and Ray Reconstruction.

Nvidia's figures are for maximum settings with ray tracing, DLSS 5 and 6x Multi Frame Generation: up to 300 fps at 4K on an RTX 5090, and up to 370 fps at 1440p on an RTX 50 card it doesn't name. Keep in mind that with 6x frame generation, most of those frames are created by AI rather than rendered by the game, so they don't feel the same as 300 real frames.
Running DLSS 5 also costs some performance on its own. Nvidia says its October model halved that cost and cut 4K memory use by 20%, which we covered in our post on DLSS 5 getting twice as fast.
For Indian PC players, the RTX 50 requirement is the big hurdle. Even the cheapest RTX 50 cards have climbed well above launch prices this year, and the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB that launched at $429 (about ₹40,800) now sells for over $700 in the US.
Why some players aren't convinced
DLSS 5 has been divisive since Nvidia first showed it in March. Early demos changed characters' faces enough that critics called it uncanny. Nvidia now stresses that faces keep the shape the artists designed, and Avalanche used DLSS 5's controls to hold back on characters.
That has swung the debate the other way. GamingBible rounded up reactions to the launch trailer, where some viewers said the new version is too subtle and that they'd be giving up frame rate for little visible gain. We haven't tested it, so we can't say which side is right, but it's a free toggle, so RTX 50 owners can compare it for themselves.
More DLSS 5 games this month
- War Thunder: mid-November, in its Eagle's Shadow update.
- Where Winds Meet: November 23.
