The short version
- Four big re-releases landed in two weeks, and the rules are different for each one.
- The Witcher 3 Remastered is a free upgrade if you own the game.
- Octopath Traveler I and II on Switch 2 are full price again, with no upgrade pack and no save transfer.
- Kingdom Hearts Collection is cheaper if you already bought the Cloud versions.
The free one
The Witcher 3 Remastered arrived September 29 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. If you own The Witcher 3 on any of those, the upgrade costs nothing. CD Projekt Red lists new visuals, a reworked skill system, combat changes and mod support.
Our Broketober list has the rest of the cheap picks this month.
The one that charges you again
Square Enix put Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II on Switch 2 on October 1, at $59.99 each or $74.99 as a bundle. Two things to know before you buy:
- There is no upgrade pack from the Switch versions. Square Enix said it has no plans for one.
- Saves don't carry over. If you owned it on Switch, you start again.
The Switch 2 versions target 60fps docked and handheld, against 30fps on Switch, and load faster. Physical copies are Game-Key Cards, so the cartridge holds no game data and you download it anyway.
Square Enix did the same thing with Dragon Quest XI S a week earlier.
The one with a discount
Kingdom Hearts Collection [I~III] arrives October 8 on Switch 2, with Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and Kingdom Hearts III plus Re Mind. It's a full-price bundle, listed at $99.99 CAD on Nintendo's Canadian store.
If you already own the Kingdom Hearts Cloud versions on Switch, you get 50% off the native Switch 2 versions, including this bundle. Pre-orders add a Keyblade called Long Night.
The old PS2 one
Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered came out September 30 on PC at $39.99, with a $69.99 Deluxe. Koei Tecmo rebuilt it in Unreal Engine 5, with the Xtreme Legends content included, 4K and ultrawide support, and split-screen co-op and PvP. Console versions followed on October 1.
Before you buy any of them
Open your library first. These re-releases are sold as new products, not upgrades, so owning the original often counts for nothing. The one check worth doing: look for a free upgrade or an owner discount on the store page before you pay.
