The short version
- AMD says FSR 4, its AI-based upscaler, will reach handheld and laptop gaming PCs before the end of 2026.
- A lighter version is planned for RDNA 3 chips, which covers the ROG Xbox Ally X (₹1,14,990 in India), most ROG Ally models and the Legion Go.
- The cheaper ROG Xbox Ally (₹69,990) and the Steam Deck use older RDNA 2 graphics and will likely wait until next year.
- Unconfirmed leaks point to new Ryzen Z3 handheld chips with FSR 4 support built in.
What AMD said
Jack Huynh, who runs AMD's computing and graphics business, told South Korean media that official FSR 4 support is coming to "a range of APUs", the all-in-one chips inside handhelds and thin gaming laptops. TechSpot reported the comments on October 7.
FSR 4 is AMD's answer to Nvidia's DLSS. It uses machine learning to upscale a lower-resolution image, so a game can run faster while still looking sharp. Our DLSS explainer covers the idea.
Until now, FSR 4 has been limited to desktop graphics cards. It launched on the RX 9000 series, and in June AMD added a lighter version for the RX 7000 series. That version swaps the FP8 maths FSR 4 was built on for INT8, which older chips handle better. Huynh said back then that an even lighter model was in the works for RDNA 3 APUs.
Which handhelds get it
On paper, handhelds stand to gain the most. Their small chips struggle to hold frame rates at native resolution, and older FSR versions can look soft on a 7-inch screen.
The RDNA 3 version should cover Ryzen AI Max machines, the GPD Win, most ROG Ally models and the Lenovo Legion Go. RDNA 2 devices, including the Steam Deck, the base ROG Xbox Ally and possibly the Xbox Series consoles, look set to wait until 2027. AMD hasn't shared performance numbers for either version.
The Ryzen Z3 leak
According to The Elec, AMD also has a new generation of handheld chips due this year with FSR 4 built in. They may be called Ryzen Z3 and Z3 Extreme.
Leaker Gotou_3rd claims they pair 12 GPU compute units with four Zen 6 cores and two low-power Zen 5 cores. The Z3 is reportedly tuned for 15W and the Z3 Extreme for 25W. None of this is confirmed, and AMD hasn't announced the chips. Treat it as a rumour until it does.
What to watch: an FSR 4 update for the ROG Ally family, and any Z3 handhelds announced before the year is out.
