Apple Is Reportedly Skipping the M6 Pro, Max and Ultra and Going Straight to M7

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the M6 family stops at the base chip in the ₹99,900 Mac mini. High-end Macs stay on M5 Pro, Max and Ultra until the M7 range arrives in late 2027 and 2028.

The short version

  • Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple is "pretty much done" with M6 chips. There will reportedly be no M6 Pro, M6 Max or M6 Ultra.
  • The base M6 stays in the Mac mini (from ₹99,900 in India) and is expected in an iMac and an entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro.
  • Apple's pricier Macs reportedly keep M5 Pro, M5 Max and M5 Ultra until the M7 family lands, from late 2027 into 2028.
  • This is a report, not an announcement. Apple hasn't commented, but Gurman has a strong track record on Apple's plans.

What Apple has already launched

Apple announced the M6 in August. It's the company's first chip on a 2nm process, with a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU and up to 32GB of unified memory. It debuted in the new Mac mini, which starts at ₹99,900 in India (₹88,900 with education pricing).

The same announcement brought the M5 Ultra to the Mac Studio. It's two M5 Max chips joined together, with up to 512GB of memory. In India the M5 Ultra Mac Studio starts at ₹6,29,900. If "unified memory" is new to you, our unified memory explainer covers why Apple builds chips this way.

What Gurman says comes next

Speaking on his podcast, Gurman laid out a roadmap that skips most of a generation:

  • Late October 2026: M6 in an iMac and an entry-level MacBook Pro. Apple has reportedly invited press to an event on October 28.
  • OLED MacBook Pro: reportedly keeps M5 Pro and M5 Max, with no chip upgrade until 2027.
  • 2027: a standard M7 MacBook Pro, then M7 Pro and M7 Max in a touchscreen MacBook Pro at the end of the year.
  • First half of 2028: M7 Ultra. That would make a new Mac Studio in 2027 unlikely.

The reported reason is focus. Apple wants its engineering time on M7, which is said to carry new technology for AI workloads.

Why it matters

On paper, the base M6 was the bigger story anyway. It's the chip most people will end up with, and it's already out. The catch is for anyone waiting on an M6 Pro or M6 Max MacBook Pro. If Gurman is right, that laptop doesn't exist, and the next real jump at the high end is more than a year away.

The October 28 event should show whether the M6 iMac and MacBook Pro part of the report holds up. We'll add India prices once Apple lists them.
